Celebration Sunday 2011 is Here and You Are Invited!!

June 5th 10am-2pm

It's time to CELEBRATE all the amazing things the Lord has been doing among us this year! It's also a very special time as we celebrate 80 years of PFC and Pastors' David and Brita Pinkston will be prayed for as our new Senior Pastors! We will be celebrating in a huge way with food, games, music and more! Be sure and join us and plan on having a family fun day - this will be a day to be remembered!!

Cleaning and Preparation Day!

We want to make our buildings and grounds look their very best for Celebration Sunday, so please join us as we prepare! All ages and skill sets are welcome and needed! Bring the whole family to help!

Good Friday Service:
4.22.11, 7pm!

Good Friday, the day of the Messiah's crucifixion is the most solemn day of the Christian year. It is a day we are invited to not only consider what the Man of Nazareth suffered but we are also being invited into His path as well. Jesus most common phrase is: "Follow me." Follow Him where? The Path of Death and Resurrection is usually and consciously avoided by many. Yet suffering is common to all. Many want to skip over Death in order to attain Resurrection. But what does the death have to teach us? What does the death of Jesus symbolize, or invite us into?

Let us set aside ourselves this Friday to contemplate, envision and activate the Messianic Path for the sake of transformation in our own lives, as well as for the sake of our friends and family, as we participate in communion with one another.

Children's Ministries:
Nursery-4th grade for Good Friday service will be available!

Easter Services:
4.24.11, 9am & 11am!

Easter is about living life in the presence of Christ- totally alive!

Special coffee and light refreshments will be served before each service at 8:30am and 10:30am!

Children's Ministries:
Nursery-4th grade for both services will be available! Both Easter morning services will include a traditional Easter Egg Hunt!

Brothers and sisters,

Thank you for your prayers. The Holy Spirit has brought about through us great and effective ministry...we could not have brought the love, healing and strength without your participation in the Spirit. May our Lord return his favor and anointing to you in kind.

Doors into Sindii are left wide open to us. They opened up classrooms for us to share on English, arts and music. Students received us with open minds and hearts. You would be very proud of your representatives in James, Aric and Armando. Each one of them ministered in very powerful and practical ways - I am deeply blessed to minister along side of these godly men. We met with the mayor of Sindii and she stated clearly to us that we are invited to return anytime we wish! May the Lord continue to bless her leadership.

Our concerts were met with joy and great participation. Students sang out on Godʼs love without even knowing it! Though we were not able to come straight out with spoken Gospel messages at the school, it was hidden in plain sight through the music and worship and hearts of each band member. Many of the same students who attended the concert at the school came to our Friday night concert at the church. Bands from all over the nearby cities joined us as well...we are helping Youth Reality to start their own version of No Future Cafe!

We shared also with our younger brothers here at Youth Reality on how to be godly men in a predatory culture. Many of these same young men shared that they had never heard of these teachings before and how this has affected them for the better. They received this grace-ﬁlled transformative message with an openness we had not fully expected!

Always remember brothers and sisters, the Good News ﬂows from how weʼve been healed and transformed in ourselves. The Gospel is developed in our lives and written on our hearts. Anything less than this is performance and simply will not bring about the change we wish to see in our world.

As the letters of John say, we have much to say to you but we do not wish to do so with letter and ink (or 1ʼs and 0ʼs for that matter).

The “Art of Family” Series!

Beginning, Wednesday, August 4^th, 7pm @ Pasadena Foursquare!

Join us for the month of August 2010 as we break from our regular Wednesday schedule to participate together in some very exciting and highly creative family-centered activities!

These interactive, no-cost, Wednesday evenings will be a great time to invite friends and neighbors to join with us for some great summer fun!

The Art of Entertainment: All family movie night in the sanctuary! Pop-corn, live action movie characters & skits included!

Wed., August 11th –

The Art of Science: God is the ultimate scientist and created our minds to be curious and ever-learning! Challenge the mind with family-oriented, hands-on scientific experiments, myth-busters and more!

Wed., August 18th –

The Art of Art!: Explore and interact with the arts with Kari Bower and PFC’s artists! Our hands on sessions will include focus on art as worship, communication, symbolism and beauty.

Wed., August 25th –

The Art of Family: Grand Finale & Prayer for Students & Teachers! A culmination of the previous three weeks and send-off for the ‘10/’11 school year!

More Details!:

Each evening will be geared for Kids House age kids (K-4^th) and their families!
Other PFC Adults are also encouraged to join in these fun, relaxing evenings with our church family!
EB and Marked will keep to their normal schedule and Nursery care will continue to be available throughout the month!
Parents are encouraged to choose to keep their pre-schooler’s in class or to bring them into the fun in the sanctuary!

Alexia Grace Hartel is born!

"We are very pleased to announce that our third child, Alexia Grace, was born today, November 9th, at 11 pm (Norwegian time). She weighed 3655 grams, and was 51 cm long. She and Sarah are both doing very well. Thank you all for your prayers."

Mommy and Me will be having a Hallowe'en party this Thursday, October 29th. Our kids will be wearing costumes and parading the Kid's House (four doors) and church office for treats and fun. In addition, we will have our circle time and other activities.
We will be serving chili and other goodies for lunch afterward. Please bring treats to give out at the doors. If your child has special dietary needs, please bring special treats for he or she to receive.

Mommy and MePumpkin Patch Tour

We are taking our kids to the pumpkin patch! We are going to the La Verne Heritage Foundation pumpkin patch on Thursday, October 22nd. We will meet at 10:15 a.m., with our tour beginning promptly at 10:25. The student tour cost is $6.00 per child and $2.00 per adult. The tour includes a walk around the grounds, hay ride, petting zoo, and a pumpkin to take home. This is a great childhood memory: bring lunch for your family and we will picnic together in the park after the tour.
Sign-ups for the pumpkin patch are available starting Thursday, October 8th. Contact Michele Harwick to register (626/275-2854). Payments will be due by Sunday, October 18th. Note: the Heritage Foundation will not accept additions after we check in on the 22nd, so please sign up early!

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

While praying over Estonia and the trip that was to ensue, the Lord gave me this verse just a few short months before we left. It was evident that it was not only a point of encouragement for the US team, but a calling, an exhortation that our actions toward one another would make or break how we were received. However, as we traveled to Estonia, it became apparent that this verse was for the Estonia team as a whole-Estonia, Norway, and US. This verse would be our calling but also our point of unity.

Sunday June 7th at 10am.
We'll meet at Loma Alta Park at 3300 Lincoln Ave in Altadena. Click on the amp below for directions. We will meet on the lower part of the park where there are picnic tables and a pavilion. We'll start right at 10am, so get there early enough to setup your picnic spot. We are serving taco plates for $4 each (max of $20 for any family) or you can bring your own. There are charcoal grills available. In the upper part of the park there is a baseball diamond, basketball court, playground and more. Make sure to put sunscreen on the kids and we'll see you on the 7th!

From Little Women:
"Yes, my dear, I have a great many; all mothers do, but mine differ somewhat from Mrs. Moffat's, I suspect...

"I want my daughters to be beautiful, accomplished, and good; to be admired, loved and respected; to have a happy youth, to be well and wisely married, and to lead useful, pleasant lives, with as little care and sorrow to try them as God sees fit to send. To be loved and chosen by a good man is the best and sweetest thing which can happen to a woman; and I sincerely hope my girls may know this beautiful experience. It is natural to think of it, Meg; right to hope and wait for it, and wise to prepare for it; so that, when the happy time comes, you may feel ready for the duties, and worthy of the joy. My dear girls, I am ambitious for you, but not to have you make a dash in the world - marry rich men merely because they are rich, or have splendid houses, which are not homes because love is wanting. Mrs. Darling first hear of Peter when she was tidying up her children's minds. It is the nightly custom of every good mother after her children are asleep to rummage in their minds and put things straight for morning, repacking into their proper places the many articles that have wandered during the day. If you could keep awake (but of course you can't) you would see your own mother doing this, and you would find it very interesting to watch her. It is quite like tidying up drawers. You would see her and her knees, I expect, lingering humorously over some of your contents, wondering where on earth you had picked this thing up, making discoveries sweet and not so sweet, pressing this to her cheek as if it were as nice as a kitten and hurriedly stowing that out of sight. From War and Peace:
Natasha had married in the early spring of 1813, and in 1820 already had three daughters besides a son for whom she had longed and whom she was now nursing. Change and the Spirit of Adventure
This two week course is designed to help those going through transitions in life, business, and family to navigate the changes required. Open to all, but especially helpful for those who are business owners or self-employed.

Spiritual Gifts
This two week interactive course is designed to help pull back the curtain on the spiritual gifts mentioned in the New Testament. Participants will have a time of learning about each gift and then, with the help of the group, will discover how God has uniquely gifted them for ministry and life.

How to Destroy A Mountain

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an extraordinary man. His words were strong and made a lasting impression on our American society that continues today. In fact, many, like Daniel Hale Williams, Bill Cosby, Thurgood Marshall, Barack Obama, and many, many more, have become major icons in our culture. Before these men could be acknowledged, nonetheless, there were many barriers that had to be overcome, which, if stacked one on top of another, would build a figurative mountain as tall as Everest. Dr. King worked vigorously to tear down this mountain; However, Dr. King was only human and could only do so much for America. So people pitched in by protesting and doing inside work with the government, and, eventually, their labors paid off with the cancellation of the Jim Crow Laws and other laws that had been in place for more than a century.

Dr. King faced many problems during his racial revolution. Even though slavery had been abolished one hundred years previous to Dr. King’s work, there were many tensions on African-Americans in the U.S. They normally did not associate with white people, were frowned upon for holding interracial romantic relationships, rarely held positions of authority, and could not even even sit in the same section of the bus. These problems build up an exceedingly tall mountain, but Dr King said, “Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men”, and it is as Dr. King says. If we can train a missile to think for its self, then how can we not train ourselves to think? So the first way that we can break down this mountain of racial injustice is consideration. Think about others and the consequences of our actions. Our own thoughts can be mental dynamite to this “mountain”.

Along with thinking, there is another thing we must do simultaneously, and that would be to change. If we think about these things that we do to restrict our fellow humans, then how can we not change? How can someone give thought to those oppressed people and not be moved by their hardships? If we change the way we look at things on the inside, it leaves room for changes in lifestyle that benefit society.

After we think, we must go farther. Even though the mental changes that we make can help us change our lifestyle on the outside, what good are these changes unless we apply them? So the next thing we must do to overcome racial injustice for African-Americans is another simple one: do. There are many ways we can utilize this crucial step. Encouraging young black children to show pride in their heritage, encouraging friendships between children of different race, improving living conditions for the less fortunate population, and teaching against the horrors of racism are all ways of preventing a relapse into what we have done in the past.

Last, but assuredly not least, we must convince other people to follow the previous steps, for one man alone can not destroy a mountain. Only as a united American people can we truly annihilate the mountain of racial prejudice once and for all. And on a graver note, those who are more serious about totally wiping out racial exclusion must be wholly immersed and committed to the cause, as Dr. King was. Dr. King preached, “I submit to you that if a man hasn’t discovered something he will die for, he isn’t fit to live”, which he did.

Traces of this mountain of racial discrimination remain a part of society, but if we follow these instructions (think, change, do, and convince), we can eliminate them from our lives and ultimately benefit the oppressed peoples.

I asked the Lord what kind of year 2009 would be for me. The Lord said a year of growth. He then showed me a forest of coral under the sea. It was very dense with many branches everywhere. I told the Lord "that looks very chaotic and crowded - to the point of being unpleasant." The Lord said to me "No, that is not you, that is Pasadena Foursquare." I got the impression that by the end of 2009, PFC would be uncomfortably crowded.

Saturday, January 3, 2009 Good morning! There’s a heart-touching quality to Hagar’s story that has always captivated me. The turning point in her dilemma centers in her discovering the fact that God’s loving oversight and care— that He always sees me!—not only was constant, but also was not dependent upon her perfection (Genesis 16).At the threshold of the New Year, my review of my own effectivenessat pursuing God’s ways in my life often comes up with something of a felt “deficit” on my part. A new calendar beckons to new resolve—andI daresay that most of us usually feel that our daily prayer life and devotional patterns seem a common call for improvement. With over 70 years of life and nearly 53 years of pastoral leadership behind me, I still find days I have to be reminded that He sees and hears me, and even likes being with me, no matter how I feel. It is that comfort and confidence that touched my heart in a special way sometime back, and I expressed it with the following poem—one which innumerable readers have said brought encouragement to them.On the possibility it may bring a time-to-time uplift to you as we walk together with Jesus into 2009, I offer it as a tender reminder: Father not only always sees us, but He delights in our presence—irrespective of our mood, our sense of being “spiritual,” or our present passion. THOU GOD SEEST ME I rose in the morning to pray one day, In the bloom of the dawn I rejoiced. And my heart skipped lightly before my God As His praises in song I voiced. Daily Readings in Proverbs

Today we are looking at chapter 29 of Proverbs in our daily reading.

Verse 6 says "An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad."
The problem with sin is that it always catches up with us. We may not suffer its full destructive power, but it will "snare" us at some point. That might simply be the guilt that we feel for having done something that we knew we shouldn't have or the experience that sin degenerates the unity that we are to have with God. The corollary that this verse tells us is that the righteous one (the one in on-going right relationship with God) is free, that one can sing and be glad because they know and experience the growing unity they have with God, others, and within themselves. This is why scripture gives us so many admonitions to choose God and not to sin. As our Father, God does not want us to have to suffer the consequences of sin, instead he desires that we experience eternal (fullness) of life in each moment.

Daily Readings in Proverbs - 2

Today we are looking at Proverbs 20. (As a side not I want to say that the new online bible youversion.com is awesome and you should use it. They even have a mobile version: m.youversion.com)

10 Differing weights and differing measures— the Lord detests them both.
23 The Lord detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him.

Notice that idea occurs twice in this chapter. That is a good sign that it is important. The Proverbs are written in a poetic fashion. Often in Hebrew poetry key ideas are repeated. One of the reasons that poetry is used in the proverbs is that it makes them easier to remember. Just think about some of the proverbs is American culture: "A stitch in time saves nine." Now, I know what it is saying, i.e. doing something in a timely manner saves you in the long haul. How this relates to sewing I have no idea, but this little rhyme reminds us of the truth it hold. It rhymes and is sing-songy and easily gets stuck in our heads. Notice that in verses 10 and 23 of our Proverb that when the idea is repeated in verse 23 the sentence is written backwards. Go ahead and look at it, I'll wait...Good, did you notice it? Kind of makes it stick in your head a bit.
What do weights and measures have to do with us today? For most of us, unless we step on the bathroom scale every day, not too much. The point of the proverb has to do with honesty. When you are the guy running the scale, the person you are doing business with is at your mercy, they are trusting that your scale is accurate and true. Thus the point of the proverb is to be trustworthy and honest in all of our interactions.
You can take this in many directions: how I conduct myself at work, in relationships, on the basketball court, at the grocery store. You name it. Our lives provide us with constant opportunity to grow in trustworthiness and honesty. Choosing to grow in these areas of our lives reveals true wisdom. It means that we are living out our faith in who God is and what He says.

Daily Readings in Proverbs

Pastor Ralph has directed the men of our church to begin reading through the book of Proverbs. One of the disciples that I have practiced in my life is reading through the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds to the day of the month. Today being the 13th, I am reading and meditating on the 13th chapter. I'll be posting on the proverbs throughout the next month. 3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

I've known both sides of this in my life. As a younger man I often spoke too quickly and got myself into a fair bit of trouble. As I have matured I have learned not be more reflective on what I say before I say it. This does not mean that I have lost my strong opinions (that will never happen) but rather that I have learned (am learning?) to think through something before I blurt it out.

Prayer for the Day: "Lord, help me to guard my mouth so that what I say builds people up, adds life, and is filled with your grace."

Church-Family Dinners

Our Church-Family Dinners kick off this Sunday. We have approximately 10 meeting places from Burbank to Covina, from South San Gabriel to Altadena. Here is a flyer with the hosts and locations. Hear Pastor David and Pastor Pete talk about it in a recent podcast.

Our dinners are a continuation of the togetherness that we started during the summer months. There was a tremendous response during the summer to the whole church being together each Sunday. The 90 Days at 9:45 have led us to continue the togetherness throughout the rest of the year. Most of the dinners will start at 6pm and end at 8pm (this is a school night).

If you haven't signed up, then you have two options:
1) Send an email to peter@pasadena4square.og and we'll put you on the list. Doing this will help the host families know how many people to expect.
2) Sign up this Sunday at church.

Autumn Schedule Changes

Sunday Gatherings - In talking with the church council, the department leaders, and the pastoral staff we have decide that we will continue in the direction that God has led us over the past 90 days. That means that we will continue to have one worship gathering on Sundays at 9:45am. Our purpose is that we remain unified in the experience of God's presence during worship, hearing from God during the preaching, and joining together with our entire church family.

4pm Service - The 4pm service was created as a place for ministry training and as a more intimate gathering. It has wonderfully fulfilled this purpose and will no longer meet. While this service has fulfilled its primary purpose we are still working to ensure that its secondary purpose of providing a place for people to gather and build friendships over a meal will continue.

Monthly Dinners - Starting October 5th we will have monthly Church Family Dinners at the homes of selected leaders in our church. These dinners are an extension of our 90 days from the summer. We have selected a number of host homes where we can gather on the first Sunday of each month and share a common meal. We will make sure that the host homes are geographically spread out so as to not cause people to have to drive too far in order to attend. These common meals will provide a place for those who are new to our church family to get connected with others and for the deepening of existing friendships. These common meals will become an integral part of our church's life and all are encourage to attend. Throughout the month of September we will discuss this further in our worship gatherings.

This Sunday we will have our final Communion and Picnic service for the summer. We will provide hamburgers and hotdogs for the kids. Please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. There will be a water slide for the kids, make sure to bring suits and towels.
